Physicians Associate appointed
Posted on 27 Mar 2020
The Partners are delighted to welcome Milen Tewolde to the practice team. Milen is a Physicians Associate, who recently qualified, having spent her training placement with the practice for periods over the past two years.
The Department of Health's Competence and Curriculum Framework for physician associates defines the physician associate as:
'…a new healthcare professional who, while not a doctor, works to the medical model, with the attitudes, skills and knowledge base to deliver holistic care and treatment within the general medical and/or general practice team under defined levels of supervision.'
Physician associates can supplement and complement GPs and nursing staff. Under supervision of a doctor, they can see a range of patients of all ages, for acute and chronic medical care. PAs are involved in acute medicine as well as chronic disease management. PAs can refer patients to other services or to A & E when clinically appropriate. Other duties include home visits, prescription reauthorisation, review of incoming post and laboratory results. As in the early days in the United States, PAs in the UK are not able to prescribe medication at this time.
Milen will be working at istead Rise and Summerhouse Surgeries.
